Classical Arabic: The Writing System
Student Text

Modern Written Arabic
Though there is considerable diversity of dialects in spoken Arabic, the written language is fairly standard with the differences falling into historical periods rather than geographical areas. The emphasis in the Modern Written Arabic course is on reading modern printed Arabic. However, before attempting this, it is necessary to learn the Arabic writing system and have reasonably accurate pronunciation. The course provides spoken exercises in Arabic and the printed transcriptions that are essential to achieving mastery of the material.

As the Arabs Say...كـَما قالـَت العَرَب

As the Arabs Say...كـَما قالـَت العَرَب

Salaam to you all,

On the happy occasion of Eid Al-Adha (عيد الأضحى‎) tomorrow, I would like to wish everyone a blessed and joyful Eid celebration.

May I take this opportunity to introduce you to (As the Arabs Say…كـَما قالـَت العَرَب) a new project which I've initiated just recently to help Arabic learners by using carefully selected Arabic quotes, proverbs, and sayings. These quotes are recorded as podcasts which will be available soon in the iTunes Podcast directory.

For this occasion, I've recorded an Eid greeting which is also written in Moroccan calligraphy.
Quote #004: Wishing You A Blessed Eid

The site is still in its first baby-steps to build an online audio library of Arabic quotes for teachers and learners of Arabic. Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

As the Arabs Say…كـَما قالـَت العَرَب

Arabic Grammar - Learn Arabic Online

Arabic Grammar - Learn Arabic Online

How we Study Grammar
Arabic grammar is centered around a single topic; grammatical inflection. Anything studied in the language is studied only because it relates to this issue. It is a feat of staggering genius on the part of medieval grammarians that almost all aspects of the language are covered just by concentrating on the issue of grammatical inflection. We start with this topic, and it branches out to cover the entire language.

Arabic as a foreigner language, what to teach dialect or MSN or both ?

Language Resource Center - Arabic

Living Arabic ISBN 13: 09780974484341
Dr Munther Younes the outher of the above text book wrote in his text book page IX ( I DAY believe that teaching a spoken dialect for everyday conversation and MSN for reading, writing, and formal speaking is the most effective way to prepare students to function in Arabic. I also believe that if a student masters any Arabic dialect well enough, he /she will be able to function in other dialects, just as native speakers from different area of the Arab world do.)

I met Dr Munther Younes in Madrid Arabela 09 where he explained how he teach his methods: dialects and MSN side by side.
Arabs from different parts of the Arab world speak different dialect, but MSN is virtually the same everywhere. However students who learn to speak only MSN they may use it in conversation, and they may hear the answer with local dialect hence they will find it difficult to understand what is being said to them.
I beginning to agree with Dr Munther Younes, above all Dr Al Batal in his new issues of (al-kittab) introduced THREE new dialect in addition to the Egyptian. In my visit to Texas University this year I saw how the students speak MSN mixed with Egyptian dialect* I was very impressed.
*By the way Dr al-batal is not Egyptian contrary to some believe.

But the question is in what stage should we teach the dialect?

The downloads are mostly files in "pdf" format. This means you need the program Acrobat Reader to open them. If you don't have it, click here to download it. For us, the best thing in this file format is that, unlike word processors or text editors that need Arabic version to read Arabic, it can read Arabic without having the Arabic version of the program.

Google ta3reeb FAQ

Google ta3reeb FAQ
About ta3reeb
Google ta3reeb (Arabic transliteration) offers an option for converting Roman characters to Arabic characters. This lets you type Arabic words phonetically in English script and still have them appear correctly in Arabic. Note that this is not the same as translation -- it is the sound of the words that are converted from one alphabet to the other, not their meaning. For example, typing "ta3reeb" transliterates into Arabic as: "تعريب".
Because of the nature of this system, there is no single "correct" way to write an Arabic character (e.g., "ج" might be transliterated as "j" or "g"). Normally, Arabic letters are represented by a letter (or a combination of letters) that are phonetically equivalent (or nearly equivalent) in English. For example, "ب" can be well represented as "b", "ت" as "t", "ث" as "th", and some may represent "ط" as "t". Arabic letters that do not have a close phonetic approximate in the Latin alphabet are often represented using numerals, or numerals followed by an apostrophe(`) or a single quote ('). These numerals are chosen so that they graphically approximate the corresponding Arabic letters (e.g., "ع" is represented using the numeral "3"). The following table summarizes those special numerals:

Technology Module: Using Digital Cameras

Technology Module: Using Digital Cameras:
"Using Digital Cameras for Language Learning
Digital cameras have become the common way to record everything around us, and as such they can be a very flexible tool in the classroom. Digital cameras have become much more reasonably priced and it is very easy to download your photos to your computer. From your computer, you can manipulate them, make projects with your photos in them, upload them to the internet, and share them with the world. Students can use graphics that you have captured for them, or they can capture their own. Teachers are starting to take advantage of the 'linked in' capabilities that more and more students have, sending them out to capture what they see with their cell phones!

Introduction: Technology for Language Learning
http://www.carla.umn.edu/technology/modules/intro/index.html
There are a lot of technology tutorials online for teachers, and tech instruction is also available to teachers in their schools or districts as hands-on courses or workshops. However, much of the time those workshops and tutorials consist of generic content aimed at teaching "how to's" or the "button-pushing" skills of particular computer tools. What those generic workshops are missing is the "application" piece: in our case, the application of technology specifically for language teaching and learning.

However,in my opinion, it seems that it is very difficult to obtain a copy of this book unless you are in Egypt.
Once more they fail to include DVD with this book, same as( part 2).
Their first book( part 1 )with DVD was excellent in spite of has no second language input.

Teaching Listening

Teaching Listening

NCLRC هذة المقالة مأخوذة من
http://nclrc.org/essentials/listening/liindex.htm
Given the importance of listening in language learning and teaching, it is essential for language teachers to help their students become effective listeners. In the communicative approach to language teaching, this means modeling listening strategies and providing listening practice in authentic situations: those that learners are likely to encounter when they use the language outside the classroom.

Planning a Lesson/all language

Planning a Lesson

A key aspect of effective teaching is having a plan for what will happen in the classroom each day. Creating such a plan involves setting realistic goals, deciding how to incorporate course textbooks and other required materials, and developing activities that will promote learning. This section shows instructors how to carry out each of these steps.
An example lesson plan and lesson planning worksheet, available as pdf files, provide step-by-step guidance for lesson development. A supervisor observation worksheet allows supervisors to give specific feedback on a written lesson plan or an observed lesson.

Dear Colleagues, As we are preparing our students here at CASAW (Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World), University of Edinburgh, to go abroad for their immersion Arabic programme, may I share some related resources that I designed for our learners to help them improve their spoken skills of the Arabic dialect:
eFlashcard Set (How to say Thank you in Arabic)
eFlashcard Set of "Commonly-used Colloquial Words and Expressions"
Hope that everyone will find the resources useful. May I request from everyone if you could kindly post some feedback and suggestions for improvement of the resources via the site.

Arabic Teachers Survey

Arabic Teachers Survey

Dear Friends,
Salamaat wa TaHiyyat. I hope that this message finds you well as you are getting ready for the summer. I wish you a very productive and enjoyable summer.

As teachers of Arabic, I would like to invite you all to participate in a survey of college-level teachers of Arabic in the US. The survey is part of study being conducted by Dr. Mahmoud Abdalla of Michigan State University, Ms. Dina Hosni of the University of Texas, and myself. The aim of this study is to:

1) understand the educational and linguistic background of teachers of Arabic in the US.2) Understand the programmatic contexts and conditions under which they teach.3) Explore some of their attitudes towards the teaching and learning of Arabic.4) Assess their professional needs.

Once the survey is done, we will analyze its results and present them to the field in the form of an article dealing with teacher preparation issues in Arabic. We seek to have the largest participation possible and we hope that you will accept our invitation and participate in the survey. The survey will be anonymous and will allow all teachers to express their views freely.

The survey will require about 25 minutes of your time to complete. We realize how busy you are, but we very much value your input and thank you in advance for taking the time to complete it.

You can access the survey at the following link:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=GtdumYmHzAtzUFZsI4q6pA_3d_3d

If possible, we would like to have your response by May 31st and hope that you will be able to spare us some time before then to take the survey. Please feel free to forward this survey to any colleagues at your institution.
Thank you again for helping us with the survey and we are looking forward to sharing the results with you soon.

Arabic Without Walls

Arabic Without Walls

Arabic Without Walls contains materials for three separate components broken down under the Course Content into Al-Kitaab, Interviews, and Culture. While each component may stand by itself and therefore may be studied independently, the three are designed to complement each other in Arabic Without Walls. The course syllabus will help you go back and forth between the textbooks, the DVDs, and the Web materials as you proceed in a given chapter. For review purposes, however, or when you choose to concentrate on a single element of the Web-based course, you will find it useful to go to Course Content and select the relevant component.

The " Languages Ladder" includes the use of "can do" statements and offers discrete skills assessment so that learners may, for example, focus on developing speaking skills. Depending on the stage the learner has reached, there may be external or teacher assessment.
The ladder comprises six stages, from Beginners to Mastery, the first four being further split into three smaller steps.

Arabic and Quran

JQuranTree - Overview

JQuranTree is organized into three parts: The Quranic text itself, a set of access APIs, and a set of analysis APIs. The distinction between accessing and analyzing the Quran is that access is concerned with representing the Arabic text (e.g. chapters, verses, letters and diacritics), whereas the analysis API is built on top of this, providing more sophisticated tools for computational linguistics
